Manual of design for energy-efficient buildings in the tropics

FAU Editions UCV

Authors: Maria Eugenia Sosa Griffin and Geovanni Siem

Returning to our recommendations on sustainable architecture books, today we bring you a book developed by the Institute of Development Experimental Construction (IDEC) which is part of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University Central of Venezuela.

This book focuses on exploring how they should the buildings be designed so that they can function efficiently in tropical climates. This topic is of great importance, as the Sustainability has been developed by countries in northern or seasonal climates, therefore the behavior of buildings in the tropical climate and the ways in which you can design bioclimatically in these latitudes is less explored.

detail green

Detail Green is a series of numbers within the DETAIL magazine editorial which focus sustainability. These numbers are published 2 times a year, in November and in May. The reason I recommend these issues of the magazine is also focusing on sustainability issues and thus give importance to these issues is the matter very seriously separated into 6 sections.

Design with the Other 90% / Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum

The Design for the Other 90% is an organization that seeks to support and publicize designs that focus on design for low-income population, seeking to improve the way we live in these populations.

The Design for the Other 90% exhibition and book are intended to draw attention to a kind of design that in not particularly attractive, often limited in function, and extremely inexpensive. It also has the inherent ability to transform and, in some cases, actually save human lives.

The works displayed and described have little relation to what we generally think of as design, and are rarely, if ever, illustrated in design magazines and journals, discussed at design magazines and journals, discussed at design conferences, or displayed in museum exhibitions. But we hope that exhibitions and books such as this one will gradually change this reality and help generate wider awareness and participation in this”other” kind of design.

All the projects that this organization supports take into account the concept of sustainable development, having a Social contribution (to improve the quality of life of communities affected), Economic (economic projects being activated and some local economic activities), and Environmental (reducing the ecological footprint of various activities in the affected areas).

Therefore, this organization and the projects they support are an example to follow, not only for their creativity to solve social problems simple and inexpensive, but also for been projects that focus on people and issues affecting the towns most affected by high levels of poverty.

Planning Sustainable Cities

PLANNING SUSTAINABLE CITIES / Global Report on Human Settlements 2009 UN Habitat

Planning Sustainable Cities reviews recent urban planning practices and approaches, discusses constraints and conflicts, and identifies innovative approaches that respond to current challenges of urbanization. Analyzes traditional planning approaches (especially in developing countries) and the reasons why they have failed.

Also, this book offers some ideas and measures to improve urban planning to deal with the challenges of the XXI century. Promoting human settlements equitable, efficient and sustainable. Taking into consideration the rapid urbanization, cities shrinking and aging, climate change and related disasters, urban sprawl and unplanned peri-urbanization and the urbanization of poverty and informality.

It analyze that new approaches to planning can only be meaningful, if they effectively address all of these challenges, are participatory and inclusive, as well as linked to the socio-political context, having more opportunity. Social awareness is very important for urban planning to be successful.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in urban planning. It is a good guide to analyze and study different projects and views on how to make an urban project. Guided by the failure of the projects already built, and concepts and ideas that can be applied to more successful projects taking into consideration the three key concepts of sustainability (Economic, Social and Environmental).

PLANNING SUSTAINABLE CITIES / Global Report on Human Settlements 2009 UN Habitat

arquitectura y clima

Author: Victor Olgyay
Editorial: Gustavo Gili
21 x 27 cm
216 pages
ISBN: 9788425214882

Architecture and climate has become a classic. First published in the early 50s in the U.S., retains all its relevance in environmental issues, exploring the relationship between buildings and the surrounding environment. For me personally it has been a basic guide when I want to address issues of climate behavior in my designs, and I think it is written in a way that any architect, planner or designer can understand the concepts covered, without the need to specialize in the subject.

The book’s author is an architect, urban designer and pioneer of bioclimatismo. He was professor of the school of architecture and urban planning from Princeton University until 1970 and a pioneer in research on the relationship between architecture and energy.
